After 15 years of walking dogs in this community, we’ve learned that caring for your pup is about more than just regular walks—it’s about total wellness.
That’s why we’re thrilled to welcome a special guest to the blog: Kaelyn Newton, owner of The Pawlour, a popular local dog grooming salon located right here in Matawan. Kaelyn is known for her gentle, professional grooming style and deep love of animals, and we thought her insight would be incredibly helpful for our fellow Bayshore dog parents.

🐶 Dog Grooming Q&A with Kaelyn Newton
Here are five common questions pet owners often ask before booking a dog grooming appointment—and Kaelyn's expert answers to help you prepare for your pup’s next spa day.
Q1. What’s the best age to bring my puppy in for their first grooming appointment in Keyport or the surrounding area? Pet parents in Keyport, Hazlet, Holmdel, Aberdeen, and Matawan often wonder when to start grooming — here's what to know about your pup’s first salon visit.
To familiarize and desensitize your puppy, you should start bringing them to a grooming salon as soon as they finish their vaccinations. I offer an ‘Introduction Puppy Appointment,’ at my salon where they are introduced to the different sounds and sensations of grooming. We do a bath, a low setting dry, nail trim and some light scissor work and we’ll also show them the equipment we might use in the future to help them ease into the process. As for a full groom, which includes a haircut for some breeds, you can typically start at 6 months.
Q2. How often should I schedule professional grooming for my dog in Bayshore, NJ? From breed-specific grooming schedules to seasonal coat care, find out how frequently dogs should visit a grooming salon in the Bayshore region.
This can be breed specific and is also dependent on how active and outdoorsy your pup is. More complicated coats, such as with Doodles, should come in every 4-6 weeks whereas a Labrador Retriever may only need to come in every 8-10 weeks. So, on average I would say every 6-8 weeks. When in doubt, ask your groomer what they suggest!
Q3. What grooming services are typically included in a full-service dog grooming appointment? Whether you’re booking a bath and brush or a full haircut, learn what to expect during a professional dog grooming session in Holmdel or Matawan.
Now, one size does not fit all but usually your groomer will include a bath, dry, nail trim, ear cleaning and hair cut, if necessary. However, you can always talk to your groomer about your dogs’ needs. Some dogs may not need a haircut but may need their paw pads cleaned up. Some breeds may need ear plucking, others may need their teeth brushed.

Q4. How can I help prepare my dog for a stress-free grooming experience? Tips for pet owners in Hazlet and Aberdeen on how to get their dog comfortable with grooming — especially helpful for first-timers or anxious pups.
First step is understanding that the grooming salon may never be stress-free for some dogs. But there are definite ways to make them as comfortable as possible. Working with your dog at home is a huge step. Playing with their paws, tail, ears and brushing them consistently will make these steps in the salon more familiar. Lastly, if your pup is really not feeling the grooming process, you may want to talk to your veterinarian about medication.
Q5. Do I need to provide anything when I bring my dog to your grooming salon? Local dog owners often ask what to bring to their first grooming appointment — here’s a quick checklist to make sure your pup is salon-ready.
Proof of vaccinations and any insight you have about your puppy. Does your dog have arthritis? Does your dog hate the vacuum? Does your dog get aggressive around other dogs? The more we know, the better we can care for them!
