At Dog Days NJ, pet care decisions are never made lightly. For the past 16 years, we’ve had the privilege of caring for dogs and cats throughout Aberdeen, Matawan, Hazlet, Holmdel, Keyport, Union Beach, Cliffwood Beach, and the surrounding Bayshore area.
One thing our experience has taught us is that some holidays require more than just a regular pet care plan. July 4th is one of those days.
That’s why Dog Days NJ has made the ethical decision to close for dog pet sitting on July 4th.
What We Mean by Pet Sitting
The version of in-home pet sitting we provide is visit-based care. That means we come to your home multiple times per day — usually morning, midday, and evening — to walk your dog, feed them, refresh water, administer care instructions, and give them attention while you are away.
This works wonderfully for many trips and many dogs throughout the year.
But July 4th is different.
Why July 4th Is So Hard on Dogs

Fireworks can be extremely frightening for dogs. The loud booms, unpredictable timing, flashing lights, and neighborhood activity can create a level of stress that many dogs simply are not equipped to handle alone.
Even dogs who are normally confident, relaxed, or independent can become anxious during fireworks. Some may pace, pant, bark, hide, shake, drool, refuse food, or try to escape. Others may become destructive or injure themselves trying to get away from the noise.
Because fireworks often happen at night and can continue for hours, a few daytime or evening visits are not always enough to provide the level of comfort and supervision many dogs need.
Why We Close for Dog Pet Sitting on July 4th
After many years in business, we’ve come to believe that July 4th is not an ideal day for dogs to be left alone with only drop-in visits.
This is not a decision based on convenience. It is a decision based on the well-being of the pets in our care.
Dog Days NJ was built on trust, and part of that trust means being honest about when our service model is a good fit — and when it may not be. On July 4th, we believe many dogs are safest and most comfortable with a family member, friend, overnight sitter, or other trusted person who can be with them for an extended period of time, especially during the evening fireworks.
One of the Few Days We Close
Dog Days NJ is open throughout most of the year, including many busy travel periods and holidays. However, July 4th is one of the few days we close for dog pet sitting.
We also close for dog pet sitting on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
These holidays tend to involve major disruptions to normal routines, increased household activity, travel, guests, and, in the case of July 4th: fireworks. For us, closing on these specific days is part of making responsible, experience-based decisions for the dogs we care for.
Cat Sitting Is Still Available

While we close for dog pet sitting on July 4th, Dog Days NJ is still available for cat sitting.
Cats generally have different care needs than dogs, and many do well with scheduled in-home visits for feeding, litter box cleaning, water refreshes, medication if needed, and companionship. As always, we evaluate care based on the individual pet and the details of the household.
Planning Ahead for July 4th
If you are traveling for July 4th, we strongly recommend making a plan early for your dog.
For many dogs, the best option is to have someone stay with them, especially during the evening. If that is not possible, consider arranging care with a trusted friend, family member, or professional overnight sitter who can provide extended supervision.
A few other helpful steps include:
Keeping dogs indoors before fireworks begin
Making sure collars and ID tags are secure and up to date
Closing windows, blinds, and curtains
Using white noise, calming music, or the TV to soften outside sounds
Creating a safe, quiet space where your dog can settle
Speaking with your veterinarian ahead of time if your dog has severe noise anxiety
